Dortmund's Backline in Tatters: Cherries' Senesi Top of BVB Wishlist Amid Free Transfer Frenzy

Dortmund's Backline in Tatters: Cherries' Senesi Top of BVB Wishlist Amid Free Transfer Frenzy

Borussia Dortmund are ramping up interest in AFC Bournemouth's Marcos Senesi as a free-agent target to shore up their crumbling defence, hit by injuries and expiring contracts. The 28-year-old Argentine has impressed in the Premier League, drawing attention from multiple clubs. Reports from Sky and Bild also link BVB to RB Salzburg's young talent Joane Gadou.

Dortmund's Defensive Meltdown

Imagine your centre-back corps getting picked off like dominoes in a stiff breeze. That's Borussia Dortmund right now, lads. With Emre Can sidelined by a gut-wrenching cruciate ligament tear, Niklas Süle waving cheerio as his contract expires, and Aaron Anselmino yanked back early from his Chelsea loan, BVB's back four is looking thinner than a striker's excuses after a missed sitter.

To top it off, Nico Schlotterbeck's future hangs in the balance – his deal runs to 2027, but whispers suggest he might fancy a summer shop window. No wonder the Black and Yellows are scrambling. As per reports from Sky Deutschland and Bild, they're casting hungry eyes towards the Premier League for reinforcements.

Enter Marcos Senesi: The Free-Agent Bargain

Step forward Marcos Senesi, the rugged Argentine centre-back who's been bossing it at AFC Bournemouth. At 28, he's a regular starter for the ninth-placed Cherries, clocking up 28 appearances this term with a cheeky four assists to boot. And get this – his contract's up in the summer, meaning Dortmund could snag him on a free. Kerching!

Rumours of BVB's interest first bubbled up in February, but now they're bubbling over. Senesi's the prototype for what Dortmund need: a no-nonsense defender who thrives in the heart of the backline. He's got that South American steel, perfect for Bundesliga scraps.

He's no stranger to big moves either. Coming through San Lorenzo in Argentina, he hopped to Feyenoord for €7 million in 2019, then Bournemouth splashed €15 million on him in 2022. Internationally, after a long wait, he's squeezed in two caps for the Albiceleste, including a full 90 minutes against Venezuela last autumn. Scaloni's finally clocked his class.

Competition and Other Targets

He's not short of suitors, mind. Back in February, the likes of Juventus, AS Roma, Brighton, Chelsea, Everton, and Crystal Palace were sniffing around. But Dortmund's charm offensive – and that free transfer allure – might just sway him.

Bild aren't stopping at Senesi, either. They've tipped Joane Gadou, the 19-year-old French youth international from RB Salzburg, as another name on the scouting list. A mix of experience and youth? Sounds like sporting director mischief at its finest.

Dortmund have form for splashing the cash on defenders – remember Mats Hummels from Bayern for €30.5 million in 2019? Or the Bellingham brothers racking up €30 million-plus fees? But a freebie like Senesi would be a proper coup, freeing up dosh for midfield mayhem elsewhere.

As the summer window looms, expect BVB to dive headfirst into the market. Their defence needs bulking up pronto if they're to challenge Bayern again. Senesi in yellow and black? Now that'd be a plot twist worth raising a pint to.
