Hearts on Top and Spurs in Freefall: Soccer's Juiciest End-of-Season Scraps

Hearts on Top and Spurs in Freefall: Soccer's Juiciest End-of-Season Scraps

While top European leagues look set for predictable winners, the real drama lies in underdog title races like Hearts' shock lead in Scotland and a chaotic Premier League relegation battle involving West Ham, Forest, Spurs, and Leeds. Hearts hold a five-point edge over Celtic and Rangers with four games left before the split, while Spurs' woes under Igor Tudor make them surprise candidates for the drop. Bill Connelly at ESPN Italy highlights these gripping subplots with two months remaining in the season.

Hearts on Top and Spurs in Freefall: Soccer's Juiciest End-of-Season Scraps

Right, while the likes of Bayern Munich are romping to another Bundesliga title, 11 points clear of Borussia Dortmund, and Arsenal hold a seven-point edge over Man City in the Prem (game in hand notwithstanding), don't go thinking the football's all wrapped up. Inter Milan boss Serie A by seven over AC Milan, Barça edge a wobbly Real Madrid by four in LaLiga, and PSG are odds-on despite a tight one-point lead in Ligue 1. But as Bill Connelly notes at ESPN Italy, the real magic's in the margins – those title tussles, Euro spots, and relegation dogfights with two months left in the 2025-26 season.

Scotland's Shocker: Hearts Dreaming of Glory

Picture this: Hearts – yes, Heart of Midlothian, last league winners in 1959-60 and famous for that gut-wrenching 1985-86 collapse – sitting top of the Scottish Premiership. After 29 matchdays, they've got 63 points and a +28 goal difference, fending off Celtic (58 points, +22) and Rangers (57 points, +26).

Early doors, it looked like a fluke amid the Old Firm's chaos. Rangers sacked their gaffer and brought in Danny Rohl in October, losing just once since. Celtic turfed two bosses before reinstalling 74-year-old Martin O'Neill as interim. Hearts stumbled in February but bounced back with two wins, while the big two dropped points. Their defence is rock-solid, and Claudio Braga et al are chipping in goals. Four games 'til the split – if they hold firm, it'll be the stuff of legends.

Blimey, Aberdeen under Sir Alex aside, no outsider's nicked it since the '80s. Pay attention, or you'll miss history.

Prem Relegation Roulette: Hammers, Forest, Spurs, and Leeds in the Mixer

Down south, Wolves are 12 points adrift and Burnley nine – toast, basically. But the scrap for 18th (and certain doom) is pure morbid joy. After matchday whatever, it's:

  • 15th: Leeds United – 31 points, -11 GD

  • 16th: Tottenham – 29 points, -7 GD

  • 17th: Nottingham Forest – 28 points, -15 GD

  • 18th: West Ham – 28 points, -19 GD

Opta's boffins fancy West Ham (48.8% relegation odds) most likely to tumble, then Forest (25.8%), Spurs (18.1%), Leeds (7.8%). But form tells a different yarn.

West Ham, under Nuno Espírito Santo in 2026, have lost just two of 11 all comps. Forest, on their fourth boss Vitor Pereira since February, stunned Fenerbache in Europa League and nicked points off Liverpool and City. Leeds are solid but unlucky, even on xG in recent draws.

Then there's Spurs – utter shambles. Outscored 18-6 in their last six, they ditched Thomas Frank for 'firefighter' Igor Tudor. Bloke bangs on about grit, tweaks the defence, benches big names... and it all backfires. That 5-2 Champions League spanking by Atletico Madrid? Rock bottom. For a club with cash to burn, how'd it get this pear-shaped? No quick fix in sight.

More Thrills to Chase

This is just the tip. English clubs are wobbling in UCL talking points, Prem giants can't slip outside the top four, and Connelly's got rankings of the world's best sides. With split seasons, playoffs, and cup runs, expect chewed nails galore. Grab a pint – football's depth never disappoints.
