Premier League's Young Guns Left in the Dust: Only ONE in ESPN's Top 39 Under-21s!

ESPN Italy's Tor-Kristian Karlsen unveils his eighth annual top 39 under-21 players, with the Premier League sorely underrepresented – just one in the top 13. Spotlight on new entries like RB Leipzig's Assan Ouédraogo and Bournemouth's Rayan, amid a global talent shift. Attackers rule the list, but injuries and minutes scuppered stars like Endrick and Garnacho.

Premier League's Young Guns Left in the Dust: Only ONE in ESPN's Top 39 Under-21s!

Picture this: the Premier League, self-proclaimed home of the world's elite footy talent, gets a proper reality check. According to Tor-Kristian Karlsen at ESPN Italy, just one of the top 13 wonderkids aged 21 or under calls England home. Chelsea might be splashing millions on youth, but these lads are eyeing pastures new. Ouch.

It's the eighth year running Karlsen's dropped his hot list of prospects, and it's a global affair. Last year's stars like Florian Wirtz (now at Liverpool, aged out), Jude Bellingham (Real Madrid), Xavi Simons (Tottenham) and Benjamin Sesko (Man United) are over the hill at 22. Time to scout far and wide, from Brazil to Australia.

Why the Prem's Not Packing the List

Sure, England's top flight still has a smattering of names, but don't expect a takeover. Karlsen and his scout mates from Europe's big clubs sifted through 100 hopefuls, boiling it down to 39 based on top-level mins, consistent showings and that X-factor to become worldies.

Why 39? It's stuck for three years and works a treat. Attackers dominate 'cause they get game time young – forwards bombing forward while centre-backs and keepers brew slower. Even big names like Endrick, Ethan Nwaneri, Alejandro Garnacho and Jamie Gittens missed out, often down to limited minutes. Gavi? Injured too much.

Defenders? A nod to Jérémy Jacquet (new Liverpool lad) and Chelsea's Jorrel Hato, but no cigar yet.

New Kids on the Block: Spots 39 and 38

Kicking off at the bottom – but still class – is Assan Ouédraogo, the 19-year-old German CM at RB Leipzig. Swapped Schalke for Leipzig in 2024 and levelled up big time. At 6ft 3in, he's a freak: balanced like a ballerina, dribbles like a demon, carries the ball at speed and bangs shots with either peg.

Box-to-box No. 8 or cheeky No. 10, he invades the box with 5.41 touches per 90 in the Bundesliga – miles ahead of other mids. Injuries have stalled him, mind. To climb higher? Beef up the defensive graft and sort that dodgy first touch.

Transfer value? A juicy €28m per Transfermarkt.

Dropping to 38, meet Rayan, Bournemouth's 19-year-old Brazilian FW/ST. Cherries snapped him from Vasco for €28.5m in January, fending off the giants. Already comfy in the Prem grind, bagged on debut vs Aston Villa.

What sets him apart? Explosive pace, physicality and a wicked left peg from wide spots. Turns counters into carnage. Aerially strong too – wins 1.87 duels per game, top for strikers. 0.4 goal contributions per match, fifth among Prem Brazilians.

Wide forward suits him best, not pure No. 9. Improvement? Ditch the left-foot obsession in 1v1s, mix it up.

Value: €40m and rising.

The Bigger Picture: Where Next for Youth Talent?

This list screams shift – Europe's elite leagues, Bundesliga especially, are youth factories. Prem's intensity is brutal; maybe kids want development time elsewhere first. Chelsea's youth binge? Smart, but results pending.

Karlsen's full top 39 (jump to Nos. 30, 25 etc.) spans GK to ST, with stats from Opta up to March 31. All under 21 as of April 1, 2026. Premier League reps? There, but sparse up top.

Fancy the full rundown? It's a scout's dream. These lads could be the next Bellinghams – if they stay fit and sharpen up. Who's your pick to crack the top 10? Pour another pint, debate rages on.
