WSL Shenanigans: Chelsea's League Cup Party Pooper, City's Stumble, and Relegation Rollercoaster

WSL Shenanigans: Chelsea's League Cup Party Pooper, City's Stumble, and Relegation Rollercoaster

Chelsea clinched the League Cup with a 2-0 win over Manchester United but boss Sonia Bompastor lamented upcoming changes excluding European qualifiers. Manchester City dropped points in a rare 0-0 draw at Aston Villa, while Arsenal kept momentum with a solid 2-0 victory. Everton and Liverpool boosted their survival bids with wins over Tottenham and Leicester respectively, intensifying the WSL relegation scrap.

WSL Shenanigans: Chelsea's League Cup Party Pooper, City's Stumble, and Relegation Rollercoaster

Picture this: you're Chelsea, you've just bossed the Continental Tyres League Cup final with a tidy 2-0 romp over Manchester United, courtesy of crackers from Lauren James and Aggie Beever-Jones. Beers should be flowing, right? Wrong. Manager Sonia Bompastor is left ruing the comp's upcoming makeover – Champions League qualifiers like the Blues get booted out to ease their packed schedules.

"It's a bit sad," she admitted post-match, getting why the decision makes sense for a club juggling more games than a dodgy cabbie. Chelsea rarely miss Europe, so this might be their last League Cup knees-up for donkey's years. Still, three cheers for the trophy – they've got silverware in the cabinet while others scramble.

Title Race Gets a Proper Wobble

The WSL fired back up after the international breather, and Manchester City turned up looking like they'd forgotten how to pass the ball. Aston Villa played the ultimate party pooper, grinding out a 0-0 draw – City's first goalless stalemate since 2020 and their first dropped points since Arsenal gave 'em a hiding in February.

As Suzanne Wrack reported for The Guardian, Villa bossed the first half, with Khiara Keating pulling off saves that'd make your nan proud. Ellie Roebuck was rock solid at the other end too. City boss Andrée Jeglertz knows the score: five games left, nine points clear of United (who've a game in hand). "Crucial battles ahead," he shrugged – understatement of the season?

Meanwhile, Arsenal are hitting that late-season stride they lacked earlier. Dropping daft points to Villa and Spurs bit 'em hard, but a gritty 2-0 over London City Lionesses shows Renée Slegers' lot can now grind out wins sans key stars. Emillia Hawkins noted the gaffer blaming pitch and wind for the scrappy footy: "We had to defend and do business." Momentum's building – City's lead might just shrink if they keep tripping.

Relegation Rumble: Foxes in Deep Dosh, Toffees on the Up

Spare a thought for Leicester, yeah? Beata Olsson lit up her first league start since December with a belter against the Foxes, reminding us why Liverpool's Swedish sniper is a bargain of the campaign. Her opener sparked a 2-0 six-pointer at St Helens, as Sophie Downey covered for The Guardian.

Rick Passmoor's crew are in the mire: nine players out, winless in 2026, five straight league Ls. Two of those to fellow strugglers – the trapdoor's creaking louder than a rusty swing.

Everton? Talk about a turnaround. From relegation flirtation to sixth spot with four straight WSL wins. Scott Phelan's high-pressing Toffees outgunned Tottenham 2-1, racking up eight on-target shots and an xG of 2.17 to Spurs' measly 0.8.

They wobbled when Signe Gaupset equalised late, but bench warmth like Inma Gabarro and Kelly Gago saved the day – super-sub magic in three minutes flat. Depth and energy: that's the Everton elixir now.

The WSL run-in's got more twists than a dodgy kebab wrapper. City grip the title, Chelsea mourn one less cup, and the bottom's a proper dogfight. Grab the popcorn – or a pint – it's going to the wire.
